This award recognizes a North Carolina student who provides extraordinary support to science, mathematics, and technology education.
Jennifer Telschow
Jennifer Telschow, a senior at E.E. Waddell High School, has certainly achieved academically but it is her support of others that makes her a leader in science, mathematics and technology education. She is designing a spring outreach session for elementary and middle school students on nanoscience. The “NanoDay” experience will introduce nanoscience to children on a simple level in an effort to create excitement and a desire to get involved in research projects. Ms. Telschow recognizes that science can be daunting for some students so she peer tutors other students at Waddell including supporting English as a Second Language students in their preparation for the algebra and biology end-of-course exams. Her leadership extends beyond the school to the community. She volunteers with the American Heart Association to provide local, state, and national policymakers with information on heart-related issues. For her work, she received the American Heart Association’s National Youth Advocate of the Year Award in 2008.
