This award recognizes a North Carolina K-16 educator who excels in fulfilling the mission of the North Carolina Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education Center.
As a professor of physics at UNC-Pembroke, Dr. Jose D’Arruda teaches both physics majors and non-majors. Dr. D’Arruda is able to connect his students with the subject through the use of hands-on demonstrations and open-ended questions. His support of students learning science goes beyond UNC-Pembroke. Dr. D’Arruda has consistently supported K-12 teachers and students through his work as a co-principal investigator on an NSF grant to improve mathematics and science instruction in rural eastern North Carolina and his tireless support of science fairs for over two decades. In 2007, Dr. D’Arruda received the University of North Carolina Board of Governors Award for Teaching Excellence.
