Early College Teacher Receives Honor in STEM Education
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. — Ben Owens, a teacher at the Early College in Murphy, N.C. has received the 2016 Outstanding Educator Award from the North Carolina Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education (SMT) Center. Mr. Owens was recognized on April 30 in Cary, N.C. at the annual SMT Celebration.
“Mr. Owens provides a vision for others to see what STEM education should be in the classroom,” said Dr. Sam Houston, CEO and president of the SMT Center. “We believe that STEM should stand for Strategies that Engage Minds – and Mr. Owens teaching style allows students to solve problems and be engaged in the education process.”
“Ben’s prior experience in the field as an engineer combines with a visible passion to empower young people to wholeheartedly connect with their world,” said colleague Ben Pendarvis. “These observations lead me to sincerely believe that Ben fulfills all aspects of the Outstanding Educator Award.”
