The North Carolina Section of the American Chemical Society was established in 1896 and is the local chapter of the American Chemical Society, a group of professionals in chemical sciences and engineering. The NCASCS provides technical programming for more than 2200 members and affiliates across the region through conferences, discussion groups and company tours. The NCACS also provides a plethora of outreach to the local community related toward the chemical sciences.
The North Carolina Section of the American Chemical Society Receives Partnership Award in STEM Education
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC – The North Carolina Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education Center CEO and President Dr. Samuel Houston announced that the North Carolina Section of the American Chemical Society is the 2014 winner of the SMT Center’s Partnership of the Year Award. This award recognizes a N.C. Partnership who excels at improving STEM education in North Carolina.

The NCASCS provides technical programming for more than 2200 members and affiliates across the region through conferences, discussion groups and company tours. However, beyond the technical programming the NCACS provides a plethora of outreach to the local community related toward the chemical sciences.
NCACS has received the award for:
- Excellence in community outreach activities. NCACS has a presence at several highly visible events in the regions such as the North Carolina State Fair, the Festival for the Eno, and La Fiesta del Pueblo. The booths provide a stage show of live chemistry demonstrations, informative materials, and hands-on activities. For National Chemistry Week, NCACS partners with local museums for interactive demonstrations.
- Projecet SEED Program (Science Education for the Economically Disadvantaged), which has provided support to more than 400 students in the region since 1991. Project SEED helps students expand their academic success and career choices in a STEM discipline by providing a summer research intership experience in a laboratory. During the program, the students receive a stipend, professional development skills and training, and mentorship.
The SMT Celebration was established in 2007 to recognize and acknowledge leaders and innovators in STEM education across North Carolina.
