Segment One: Mapping the Earth’s Resources
In this video segment, students are introduced to the process of geologic mapping as they observe four geologists develop a geologic map for a small area in the North Carolina Piedmont. This video reinforces the scientific method and use of multiple working hypotheses. The team of geologists begins by searching for information about the area and recording it on a base map. The base map is then used to organize the team’s fieldwork in a systemic manner. To determine the orientation of rocks, the geologists measure the strike and dip of each rock outcrop. The geologists also take samples and careful notes, which are later studied in the laboratory. The completed map and notes are made available for other geologists.
